a story from matt:

This happened to me once, although not a sheared shaft but a failed U-joint. I had a scout fulla kids and had just pulled up a steep driveway at a house in Tahoe Donner which was rented by the UC Davis Nordic Ski team - it was deep into ski season and we just finished training. The garage was open at the house and the entire team was either on the front deck or in the garage waxing skis. Scout pulls up, I put her into park, I hear a "clunk", the scout rolls backward and my driveshaft is sitting there on the ground in front of us as I hit the brakes. I couldn't get anybody to stop laughing so I did too; I removed the shaft / joints from the transfer case and I drove
home in 4WD using only the front driveshaft. Cold repair though, that one.

Middle of winter under the car. Oh well.
